Steer is proud of our role in taking forward the £1.1 billion extension of the London Underground Northern Line from Kennington to Battersea Power Station via Nine Elms, which opens today.

Steer has been involved in the development of the Northern Line extension since 2007. The scheme evolved through discussions between Transport for London and Steer Director Peter Twelftree, who was advising the Battersea Power Station developers. Since then, we have worked with Transport for London to develop the business case, assess the scheme's transport effects during construction and after opening, and to support the Public Inquiry. The station's opening coincides with the completion of the first phase of TfL's Battersea Park Road / Nine Elms corridor improvements scheme, including new signalised junctions, integration of segregated cycle facilities and public realm improvements which Steer prepared the detailed design and provided design support and site supervision during construction.

The extension has two new 3.2-kilometre tunnels and two new fully accessible step-free stations at Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station with journey times to the West End and the City of less than 15 minutes. Trains run from Battersea Power Station on the Charing Cross branch direct to Waterloo, Leicester Square, Tottenham Court Road and Euston with the City and Bank branch of the Northern line reached via a cross-platform interchange at Kennington. Initially, trains are running every 10 minutes, increasing to every 5 minutes in 2022.

The new extension is a significant spur to regeneration and growth, transforming the Vauxhall, Nine Elms and Battersea Opportunity Area (OA) into a major new commercial and residential district. It is expected to support around 25,000 new jobs and 16,000 new homes.

The £1.1 billion project is being financed mainly by the private sector through a unique funding model. Contributions from developers building in the OA, and incremental business rates within the enterprise zone, cover most of the project's costs.

Steer has been involved in the development of London's transport infrastructure supporting regeneration and growth since the 1980s with key roles in the development of the Docklands Light Railway extensions to Bank and Lewisham, the Jubilee Line Extension to Canary Wharf/east London and the branch of the Elizabeth Line to Canary Wharf. We are currently also advising on the transport and business cases for the extension of the Overground to Thamesmead and West London Orbital.

All our colleagues at Steer are looking forward to using London’s new extension to visit Battersea Power Station, Nine Elms and the rest of the very successful Opportunity Area.
