Design and build of the Valley Metro Ridekick app

Steer was commissioned to design and build a new version of the Valley Metro’s Ridekick app for iOS and Android, building on the work we’d previously delivered for their responsive website. The app needed to provide transit trip planning and 'Nextride' real time arrivals for every bus stop and light rail station in Phoenix.

The main goal of the project was to bring the app in line visually with the new website and make it 100% accessible for screen reader users – all within three short months. We bolted on the Urbiplan API that we'd used for the main website, so data sources were completely consistent between applications.

How we helped

To save time, the app was developed for both iOS and Android in parallel using React Native technology. The UX was enhanced from the main website and mirrored the work we'd done for the trip planner and Nextride tools. GPS was used extensively to provide 'nearby' transit options and a use your location to plan a trip quickly tool.

The app was launched on time and to budget, on December 27, 2017.
