Highway & urban realm improvements for Tottenham Court Road station

Tottenham Court Road is one of the busiest underground stations in London providing a 'gateway to the West End'. The station is undergoing a major transformation to accommodate the new Crossrail interchange which will increase passengers passing through the station every day from 100,000 to more than 200,000.

Our Integrated Design team were responsible for progressing the highway and urban realm improvements to deliver the first tranche of the West End project a £41m scheme to boost businesses, create new public spaces and safely accommodate the big increase in people coming to the area.

Steer produced the preliminary design, traffic modelling, construction drawings and highway specification for these works and provided on-site design support to Taylor Woodrow Bam Nuttall.

Our team were responsible for resolving several complex and challenging issues of reinstating the highway and introducing bespoke drainage and hostile vehicle mitigation measures above the new underground ticket hall. Keeping the highway operational at this strategic node whilst improving the highway and urban realm required a lot of thought by the design team.

Steer was responsible for developing the complex construction sequencing and traffic management plans and coordinating the implementation of these works alongside the works to redevelop the grade II listed Centre Point tower, Consolidated development and Crossrail whilst gaining approvals from two London boroughs.

This allowed the Contractor to complete the highway works in a timely manner resulting in the junction being opened to general traffic while the remaining station works were still on-going.
