By Steer

Steer Davies Gleave are pleased to announce that their work with University of Edinburgh has been recognised in the British Cartographic Society Annual Awards for the Easter Bush Campus Travel Map, in the category of Stanfords Award for Printed Mapping.  The judges commended the entry as it contained a lot of good information clearly drawn, was very easy to use and met the user needs perfectly.

About the map

To support the relocation of  both staff and students to the new Easter Bush Campus, located eight miles to the south of Edinburgh city centre, a leaflet was produced by Steer Davies Gleave to highlight their travel options.  We were commissioned to develop several maps showing the amenities around the new site and to highlight the links from the site to Edinburgh city centre.  As parking is very limited at the new site, public transport is the recommended means of getting there and bus routes were reviewed to create a better link between campuses and halls of residence as well as major transport hubs like mainline rail stations.

The strategy behind the map builds upon existing travel planning work undertaken at the site and recognises the travel opportunities associated with neighbouring organisations in the Easter Bush area. The local area map was also used to encourage regeneration in the area of Penicuik and allow the new visitors to explore the area with confidence.

About the Award

The British Cartographic Society (founded in 1963) has been recognising good map design with Awards since 1978. The recently revamped Awards system is designed to encourage entrants from all disciplines in cartography, and to showcase products created through traditional or new, even experimental, techniques. They aim to promote the best of cartographic products and highlight good cartographic design in the UK and abroad. http://www.cartography.org.uk/awards
