Steer have been assisting Thurrock Council with the regeneration of Grays Town Centre since 2018, providing design and transport assistance to a variety of projects. These have included supporting planning applications for the redevelopment of underused car parks, progressing proposals to replace the level crossing at the railway with a pedestrian/cycle underpass and enhancing Grays Riverside.
Most recently, Steer helped Thurrock Council to successfully gain planning consent for enhancements to Grays Beach Riverside Park, valued at £9m. The project comprises upgrading the riverside walkway to provide new viewing platforms across the River Thames and providing a pedestrian/cycle route as part of the National Cycle Network.
The project is now planned to be carried forward to implementation.
What we did
Steer helped the wider design team by advising on design parameters for the pedestrian/cycle route, to ensure compliance with LTN 1/20 and to cater for maintenance and emergency vehicles. Steer also contributed towards the Design and Access Statement and assisted with liaison with internal and external stakeholders.
Through sensitive application of design standards, Steer has assisted with creating a missing link in the National Cycle Network. When implemented, this will encourage more people to cycle (and walk) in Grays, having positive impacts upon health and reducing traffic flows in the town centre.
